The 36-foot single level fiberglass trailer was built by Surrey Fire Safety House located in Napoleon, Ohio. This mobile classroom is handicap-accessible, making it available for everyone. The bleacher design allows for a higher volume of training, and more comfort for children or adults. The trailer is equipped with a propane furnace, roof-top air conditioner, working refrigerator, microwave, and water tank. Using a smoke machine that pumps out non-toxic smoke, participants will be able to see the smoke and why it is important to stay low to the floor and get out. Students will be able to practice a fire drill and escape the bedroom by using a second exit. The trailer is also equipped with a severe weather package to teach the children, and adults, to recognize severe weather warnings, and what steps should be taken to stay safe when severe weather threatens. The weather package allows the children to learn and then experience a severe weather simulation. The bedroom will convert to a command center, featuring a bed that converts to a stand up height workstation with 110 volt, 12 volt DC, and telephone outlets. Overhead cabinets above the bed are wired with outlets for radio equipment. The trailer was purchased in 2004 with an award from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's U.S. Fire Administration 2003 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Ninety percent of the cost was from the grant with the fire district supplying the remaining ten percent. Nearly three years later, members of the Brownstown Fire Protection District remain excited about the opportunities this safety trailer offers to educate children and adults in fire safety and severe weather safety. |
